Countdown begins to 2013 ANZ Championship
By Netball Australia
The ANZ Championship returns in search for a sixth champion in as many years when the world’s best netball league commences in March 2013.
With five champions in five seasons since the league’s inception, including New Zealand’s first winner in 2012, Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic, season six is sure to spring some new surprises.
New Zealand city Nelson will host its first ANZ Championship game and season opener when the Canterbury Tactix welcome defending champions Magic on Sunday 24 March at Trafalgar Centre.
The Trafalgar Centre is a new venue for the ANZ Championship hosting two games this coming season.
“With five winners in five seasons, the ANZ Championship has become one of the great Australasian leagues where we start the season with all teams a genuine chance of becoming champions come the Grand Final,” ANZ Championship General Manager Andy Crook said.
“In 2013 we will see for the first time Canterbury Tactix play at their second venue in Nelson which will support the growth of netball and the Tactix brand in their region.”
All ten teams will be in action in Round 1 with Adelaide, Brisbane, Auckland and Sydney to host the remaining four matches with three to be played on Sunday and the traditional two matches on Monday night.
The league remains a 17-week competition, which includes 14 regular season rounds followed by a three week Finals Series with the 2013 Grand Final to be contested on 14 or 15 July 2013.
As with previous years, all matches will be played on Saturday, Sunday or Monday with the Australian and New Zealand teams to play each other once, and the four teams from their respective countries twice.
Fans will have to wait until Round 13 for the Grand Final rematch between the Melbourne Vixens and Magic with Claudelands Arena hosting the much-anticipated fixture on Sunday 16 June.
The ten ANZ Championship franchises have until 5 November to name their preliminary squads before having to submit their final squads to the league one week later on 12 November at 5.00pm (NZT & AEST).
The 2013 ANZ Championship will be broadcast on SKY Sports in New Zealand while an Australian broadcaster is to be confirmed. Please note that match times are still to be finalised.
